Sydonie Mansion is a beautiful and historic property located in Sydonie, Florida. It was designed by famous architect Grosvenor Atterbury, and completed in 1904. The mansion was a winter retreat for the Laughlin family, owners of J&L Steel in Pittsburgh. The mansion was constructed in the Mediterranean Revival style and features 11 bathrooms, 13 bedrooms, and handcrafted wood moldings. You can visit this mansion at 5538 Sydonie Dr, Mt Dora, FL 32757.
The original antiques survived in the mansion until 1995 when they were sold at auction. Some were even purchased by Barbra Streisand. Other furnishings were sold to local residents. Amy Frogley says she believes that most of the antiques were sold to local people. Three years ago, the family had the antiques appraised by a local antique dealer. The appraised items were sold at auction, including many of the original furniture and furnishings. Some window shutters, screens, and summer fireplace screens were also sold. Amy Frogley and her family hope to find the original custom-fitted shutters for the mansion.

Besides being a historic property, Sydonie also serves as an educational institution. It was founded by Dr. Pierre Wilds DuBose and later became the Hampden DuBose Academy. Its daughters, including future president Bill Graham, attended the school. During WWII, the mansion’s roof served as a landmark and guided aircraft. During the 1970s, the school converted to a day school.
